Minister Chen Deming held talks with Mr. Jon Huntsman, newly appointed US Ambassador to China, in Beijing on August 22.

Mr. Chen Deming expressed his welcome to Mr. Ambassador Huntsman and hoped that Mr. Ambassador Huntsman could make a good use of his experience in international trade and economy and continue to make positive contribution to US-China trade and economic ties.

Mr. Chen Deming said over the last 30 years since establishment of China-US diplomatic ties, China-US relations have been developed well, and China and the US have become important trade and economic partners to each other. Meetings of top officials of the two countries are frequent this year, and not long before, the two sides have successfully held the first round of the China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue. Within this year, the leaders of the two countries will meet at several occasions, which will surely further promote the development of the China-US reciprocal cooperation. Under the present international financial crisis, it is the highest priority to stick to G20 commitment and to oppose trade protectionism, which will be conducive to the early recovery of the economies of all countries.

Mr. Ambassador Huntsman said, he felt honored to hold talks with China’s Commerce Minister on the first day of assuming office. The US administration attached great importance to trade and economic ties with China, and would like to join efforts with China to oppose trade protectionism.

The two sides also exchanged views over trade and economic issues of common interest.
